CATONSVILLE NINE COMMEMORATIVE ACTION

May 6 @ 12:00 pm

The Catonsville Nine were Catholic activists who burned draft files on May 17, 1968 to protest the Vietnam War outside a draft board in Catonsville, Maryland.  They took 378 draft files, poured home-made napalm over them and set them on fire.  There will be a commemoration of this heroic event starting May 4 and continuing through May 6, 2018.  For more information, go to http://www.catonsville9.org/.

As part of the commemoration, there will be a protest at the National Security Agency at Fort Meade, Maryland.  To participate in the protest, take the Canine Road entrance off of Route 32 and park in the visitor’s parking lot.  Remain in the parking lot until the organizers arrive.  There will be a vigil on Route 32, followed by a letter delivery to the main guard station at the NSA.

The letter will be addressed to Vice Admiral Michael S. Rogers, the director, seeking a meeting with him or his representative.  The Nuremberg Tribunals taught us that when a government is involved in war crimes, citizens must speak out. The NSA has played a role in the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, and the attacks on Libya, Pakistan, Syria and Yemen.

The agency has a well-recognized history of illegal surveillance and other activities which violate the constitution.  The Trump Administration, like Obama’s, is engaged in an assassination program through the use of unmanned aerial vehicles.  We believe the use of killer drone strikes is immoral, illegal and unconstitutional.  Even U.S. citizens have been assassinated by drones without due process.  Philip Berrigan was one of the members of the Catonsville Nine, and his last protest before his untimely death took place at the National Security Agency.

So join the protest to honor the Catonsville Nine and all others involved in draft board raids during the Vietnam War.  Contact Max Obuszewski at 410-323-1607 or mobuszewski2001@comcast.net.
